Dear daughter,
I know I'm just your mom, and you probably don't think I really know what it's like to be you .. and I don't.
But I do love you, very much, so much, unbelievably a lot and I hate to see you hurt.
I hate to see you stub your toe, or scrape your knee, or fall off of your bike. Your tears are my tears.
You are beautiful.
You are beautiful to me, to your family, to your friends, to Jehovah.
Whether you believe it or not, you are worth MORE than your weight in gold to us.
I may not really know what it's like to be you ... but I do remember what it felt like to be me.
When I was a teenager, I craved love. Not the love that you get from a parent, or a friend or a family member. LOVE. True love. For a partner, a soul mate, a best friend. I spent most of my time dreaming of finding someone who would love me. Was that even possible? Could I find someone who would fall in love with me?
What I didn't realize is that when it did find me, and it did eventually, that it would be all consuming.
I want you to be prepared for your first love to be a Hans.
Anna loved him. She was willing to give up anything and everything for him.
And you will probably feel the same way. I know I did ... more than once.
But you are worth so much more. You deserve so much more.
You shouldn't settle for someone who makes you feel bad about yourself.
You shouldn't settle for someone who is rude, mean, or distrustful of your friends and family.
You shouldn't settle for someone who doesn't love you for every part of you.
You shouldn't settle for someone who you feel you have to change for.
If you feel like you need to hide your relationship, there is a reason.
If he ever intimidates you, there is a reason.
If you have already found "the one", and you are beyond angry with me right now, there is a reason.
Your head is trying to scream over your heart to warn you that something is wrong.
A real man, a good man is:
- Good in public AND in private - 1 Peter 3:4 "but let it be the secret person of the heart in the incorruptible adornment of the quiet and mild spirit, which is of great value in the eyes of God."
- Show reasonableness instead of anger during conflict - Galatians 5:19, 20; Colossians 3:8 James 3:17 "But the wisdom from above is first of all pure, then peaceable, reasonable, ready to obey, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial, not hypocritical."
- Never manipulative, possessive, or jealous - 1 Corinthians 13:4 "Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous. It does not brag, does not get puffed up"
- Spoken well of by many, including adults - Acts 16:1, 2 "and he was well-reported-on by the brothers"
I know it's hard, and believe me, I love you and I WANT you to be happy.
That's just it. I want you to be happy, and a Hans can't make you happy.
So, to my Anna ... don't settle for a Hans.
Save your heart for a true Prince
one who will always make you feel like a Princess
Love always,
Your mom
